A STUDY ON MEASUREMENT SOFTWARE BY QS AMONGMALAYSIAN QUANTITY SURVEYING FIRM1. INTRODUCTIONConstruction Industry is an industry involving various professions like an architect, engineerand one of the professions is Quantity Surveyors. According to Keng. T. C., et al (2015) statequantity surveyor as known as QS is a construction project consultant working in theconstruction industry. Surveyor is one of the professions which plays an important role in anyconstruction development project. Basically, quantity surveyors are professionals working inthe construction industry prioritize construction costs in terms of the type of material and alsoadvise architects and engineers on the cost implications of their design, ensuring the clients’interests are always safeguarded. There are some duties and responsibility of quantitysurveying such as preparation of preliminary cost estimates and cost plans of thedevelopment project; advice on procurement, tendering and contractual procedures andarrangement; advice on cost estimates in relation to design development of project;preparation of the bill of quantities or specification document for tendering purposes;organise the call of tenders; and evaluation of tenders received in the form of tender reports. Davis et al (2009) in the construction industry, BQ is a document used in constructionprojects with complete descriptions of materials, workmanships including quality, and thequantities. In tendering document, the bills of quantities are designed primarily, but it alsoprovides a valuable aid to the pricing of variation and computation of valuations for interimcertificates (Keng. T. C., et al, 2015). There are various measurement software like Cost X,AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel and WinQS31 are available in the market for simplifying the workof the quantity surveyors. These software setups help in speeding up the traditional processand also have various other advantages like easy revisions, associated with them. 2. PROBLEM STATEMENTAccording to Keng. T. C., et al (2015) state the most problems of using measurementsoftware in the preparation of BQ are high software installation cost, and many proceduresto learn and remember. Firms that use measurement software would need to spend a highcapital cost for the purchase of the software, and time consuming for staff to learn andremember the procedures before the software can be utilized efficiently. This is supported bydata from Keng. T. C., et al (2015), from 15 respondents, the highest percent is 60% statethe problem of using measurement software in BQ preparing is high software installationcost and the less percent is cause by the over-measurement and lack of flexibility which is6.7%.
