Realism vs. idealism Contrapposto - an Italian term used in the visual arts to describe a human figure standing with most of its weight on one foot so that its shoulders and arms twist off-axis from the hips and legs. This gives the figure a more dynamic, or alternatively relaxed appearance Insula/ae - was a kind of apartment building that housed most of the urban citizen population of ancient Rome, including ordinary people of lower- or middle-class status (the plebs ) and all but the wealthiest from the upper-middle class (the equites ). The ground-level floor of the insulae was used for tabernae, shops and businesses, with the living space upstairs.
