Angels in America Play AnalysisI. Given CircumstancesA. Environmental Facts1. Geographic Location:The play takes place in a multitude of places, the main one being Brooklyn as well as different parts of New York city. A small scene happens in Salt Lake city, and the rest are places that are visited in a dream/ hallucinating state by two of the characters, one beingAntartica. 2. Date: The end of 1985, and the beginning of 1986.3. Economic Environment: The characters fall into mostly middle-class to upper class. Because of the location of the play, lower class (homeless) are mentioned in the play. 4. Political Environment: The political environment is extremely heavy, two of the characters are Republican and work within the government/justice system. Roy works as a high class lawyer, and has many connections within the white house. Joe is a chief justice clerk, and battles with the decision to go to Washington and work for the attorney general. On the other hand Louis is Democratic, and talks a lot about the injustices that come with Democracy , he works as a word proccessor in the Second Circuit of Court Appeals. There is also a lot of mention about the trial of EthelRosenberg, she even appears as a character for a scene. 5. Social Environment:The play grapples with being gay in this specific time period, theproblems stemming from AIDS, as well as attmepting to be a gay man with a position of power, and thepain from being closeted and “betraying” your faith. There is a lot of heavy material which makes the social environment key to the movement of the dramatic action. 6. Religious Environment:Half of the characters are Jewish, the other half are Mormon, and a few are unspecified. The religion plays a key part in Joe's story because his religion isn't just his religion, its the culture he has been brought up withtin. The only thing he was subjected to before he moved to New York. This has played a huge part in him supressing his true gay self to the point of his
body breaking down. The pressure put on some of the characters by religion is insane, and motivates a huge amount of the decisions made, and goes hand in hand with the social environment. B. Previous Action: Some of the previous action includes Prior and Belize's romantic relationship, Roy's theft of money from one of his clients his hand in the Ethel Rosenburg trial. Roy and Prior have also contracted HIV at some point in the past. Lastly, Joe's relationship with his father ismentioned, and the start of his relationship with Harper. C. Polar Attitudes: Prior: Beginning: He is scared of losing Louis, and is frightened of dying.
