The enlightenment didn’t spread very far because most people couldn’t read or write. ii. The people who were influenced by the enlightenment were on the verge of becoming very important people, the new middle class. b. A period where the industrial revolution made progress i. The real key moment comes with the creation of the railroad in the late 1820s. ii. In 1789 there were no steam engines in France which was the wealthiest country in Europe. 2. Was a. A time when population increased dramatically. i. They conducted few censuses. ii. Between 1740 and 1800 the population doubled. The birth rate went up and the death rate went down. By 1740 the mini ice age was starting to come to an end, which meant the growing season grew larger. The crop yields increased and there was more food to go around. Women whose nutrition level falls below a certain level do not conceive very easily. The nutrition level increased slightly causing more conceptions. The potato made its appearance in Europe from America. It had the highest crop yield. The death rates went down because people had more to eat As the population began to increased, they would turn swamps into farm land in order to create more room for people to settle. Until the 18 th century, malaria was a common disease. It declined after the swamps started to disappear. iii. Weather wasn’t completely back until the 1850s. During the 18 th century, weather was either good or bad which meant harvest was either good or bad. When we do have bad harvest we will have severe social dislocation. They will go looking for food and steal it from anywhere they could. b. A time of war i. In 1700-1713 it was the War of Spanish Succession. King Louis XIV’s wars.
ii. In the 1720s it was the War of Polish Succession. iii. In 1740 – 1748 it was the War of Austrian Succession. iv. In 1756 – 1763 it was the 7 Years War v. In the 1780s it was the War of the American Colonies vi. The European Great Powers Great Britain France Prussia Austria Russia vii. War was very expensive causing the governments to be under constant stress. The only place they could find money that hadn’t already been taxed were the nobility and the church. They will not be willing payers. viii. Caused huge conflict between rulers and privileged because they didn’t want to be taxed. C. The Great Powers 1. Great Britain a. They had recently gone under the Glorious Revolution under William and Mary. i. They produced no heir so the throne went to Anne. ii. After Anne died childless the throne went to the Hannover family b. George I came over to England and can’t speak English. c. He is followed by his son George II who can speak English but he is a horrible ruler.
