During the period of 1750-1900, the British Empires colonized much of the globe fromthe tips of south Africa, to their crown jewel of India. Their superior weaponry, attributed to theIndustrial revolution, allowed for the British to control and govern a population far bigger thanthem. The people of Europe used the theory of “Social Darwinism,” to justify their colonialholdings. With the inventions of the telegram and the steam engine, the British were able tokeep a hold on the vast colony. The British would take raw materials from these colonies anduse them in their industrial factories. These ideas and militarized prominence shifted thebalance of power from the Islamic Empires to the European industrial powerhouses. With India being under British rule, an important question comes up. “To what extent wasIndia able to independently exercise its power?” Although the people of India won occasionalbattles against the British, their ability to independently exercise power was limited because theBritish controlled local rulers, the Indians were incapable of supporting themselves, and Indianvictories were before Britain became an industrial powerhouse.
