RES:815 Topic 4 DQ 2: It is the goal of a new doctoral student to become a scholar in their field of study. However, when the doctoral student first begins this process, they are often novice learners. As such, it is not uncommon for these learners to make mistakes when attempting scholarly writing (Parks-Stamm, 2020). For instance, when my 22-year-old son was beginning kindergarten, the teachers strongly discouraged the parents of the students to be critical of writing assignments. Back then, students were encouraged to sound out words to spell and punctuation did not seem to be important. This bothered me to no end. I remember asking my son’s teacher, how does this help them learn proper techniques. The teacher informed me that as the students read more their writing skills would mimic that of the books they were reading. I remember thinking that was a crazy idea, but did as the teacher suggested and my son did learn. I mention this because this is how I see myself learning to be a scholarly writer.
