April 2, 2008 Eisenhower – won in 52 and 56 - Moderate republican - Republican party enjoys some growth in the South - Wanted to ignore issues such as civil rights, when asked he didn’t endorse or oppose it. - Military industrial complex - could not reduce tensions of the cold war, beware of military industrial complex. -US spending large portions on defense budget, it isn’t good for anyone except for the companies making money off of it 1960 election - Richard Nixon 1960 (R) - Lyndon Johnson v Kennedy (D) - Kennedy won nomination - Kennedy chose Johnson as running mate to balance ticket to satisfy other needs of the party - Kennedy wins - People wondered why Johnson took VP office because it wasn’t worth very much as opposed to the senate majority position he held - People scared that Kennedy (a catholic ) would become president -gave speech that Kennedy was not the catholic candidate for president and did not speak for the church. Not going to focus on religion. Kennedy does not have much success as president.
