Organic chem labJune. 16, 2020Melting point labObjectiveThe purpose of this experiment was to identify an unknown solid and to determine the meltingpoint ranges for mixtures of cinnamic acid urea. This experiment was executed using a Mel—Temp apparatus. The data gathered was then used to prepare a melting point diagram to deter-mine the eutectic point of the mixture(s) of Cinnamic acid and Urea.ExperimentIn the lab performed , the identity of the unknown solid was determined as well as the eutecticpoint of a mixture of urea and Cinnamic Acid. The following materials were used to perform theexperiment throughout the lab: the Digi-Meltapparatus, long transparent tube, capillary tubes, weighing paper and a spatula. During part one of the experiment, an unknown solid was chosenand its intrinsic properties was observed.the unknown solid that was chosen was, vial #1. Theunknown solid's descriptive properties are; white, small spherical shaped granules. After shortobservation , a small amount of the unknown n substance was slayed on a piece of weighing pa-per. It was then grounded / pressed evenly with the back of the spatula.Approximately 1-2 mm of the unknown solid was packed into two capillary tubes and repeatedlydropped down the long transparent tube. This was performed to tightly pack the capillary tubeswith no air gaps. The sample was this technique was used to reduce the melting point error of theexperiment. The capillary tubes were then placed inside the apparatus and the start temp, ramprate and stop temp were set. Two types of parameter settings were were set to help determine theunknown’s melting point.the first was the “Fast ramp settings”.the Fast ramp setting gives the ap-
