Desmond Tutu, a South African Anglican cleric who is known for his role in the obstruction of racial segregation in South Africa, once stated “you don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.” (Desmond Tutu). With that beingsaid, I have always been fond of this one particular quote from Albert Einstein. He exclaimed “rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life” (Quotations about family).I know that I love my family infinitely, but what exactly is family? There are many different denotative meanings of “family” and in my opinion it depends on one’s perceptions of the world that molds these definitions. In my opinion, family is a group of individuals including parents, children and relatives that love, care and respects one another. Families are supposed to work together to prevail in this world, look out for one another, and set positive examples for other members in the family. Families are supposed to put one another first in life and should be able to count on them at any given time or during any situation. Families are major agents of socialization, a process of social interaction where aperson acquires the knowledge, attitude, values and behaviors essential for effective participation in society. The family has four main functions dealing with the social construction of children and their childhoods (Byrd Notes 2013). I use this to tie in my family’s role in my life and them being a function, helping me with this socialization in everyday life. One of the functions of the family is their providing of intimacy, love and affection. The family should be seen as a primary group where intense, frequent, face to face interactions take place on a daily basis. My family would be placed in this group versus
families where members fall under a secondary group. Secondary groups are more impersonal, segments and utilitarian. Families function as a formation of a cooperative economic unit. They should entitle their children to have access to their production and consumption of these economic means. The parents are a child’s initial source of capital, money and other resources they may need in life. The family also functions as social placement on behalfthe child. This process is referred to as status inheritance which is ascribed to the child at birth. They are assigned social statuses and roles that will follow them throughout their life (Byrd Notes 2013).
