Though we Die, The Resistance Lives OnJosh Vernon (500455193)HST802In 2008, Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy starred in Valkyrie, a film depicting one of the many attempts by Nazi soldiers to assassinate Adolf HitlerI. The film stars Cruise as Claus von Stauffenberg, the leader of the most prominent resistance groups in Nazi Germany. The film chronicles Stauffenberg’s rise from a colonel in the German army in Africa, detailing his growing hatred of the Nazi regime, and provides an account of the weeks leading upto the assassination attempt that took place on 20 July 1944II. The film shows the planning stagesof the attack, the attack itself and then the aftermath, as the group led by Stauffenberg attempts tobegin a new regime in GermanyIII. The events portrayed in the film are an extremely accurate detailing of the events of the assassination attempt. Director Bryan Singer has done an excellent job in providing an accurate historical portrayal of the events of the July 20 Plot. Though the film mainly revolves around Claus von Stauffenberg and his time as the head of the conspiracy to kill Hitler, the story of his fellow conspirators dates much further back. Though much of what happened prior to Stauffenberg’s involvement in the conspiracy is irrelevant to the film, many events are important in order to illustrate his importance to the movement. The events that occurred within the resistance movement prior to Stauffenberg joining it help show that the ideas for the conspiracy had already been laid out. The idea to institute Valkyrie in order to declare a state of emergency was one that the group had already IIMDB. “Valkyrie (2008).” Accessed July 21, 2014. .IIIMDB. “Valkyrie (2008).”IIIValkyrie, directed by Bryan Singer (2008; Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 2009), DVD.

The plan had been discarded after the group realized that the only way this plot would be successful was if Hitler were to be killed, which prior to Stauffenberg’s involvement, was an impossible task. Many of these critical details of the resistance are omitted from the film as they detract from the importance Claus von Stauffenberg had to the movement. Every Hollywood film needs a hero who is brilliant and courageous. Though Stauffenberg displayed both of these traits numerous times throughout the year he was conspiring against Hitler, the film chooses to twist the truth in order to exaggerate his heroism. In the film, Stauffenberg introduces the edict of Valkyrie to the groupV. Stauffenberg is also the man who brings up the fatal flaw in their plan, the fact that neither he nor Olbricht have the power to authorize ValkyrieVI. In reality, even before Stauffenberg joined the resistance group, the conspirators knew that in order to succeed inoverthrowing Adolf Hitler, they would need to deal with Friedrich Fromm, the only one who could legally initiate ValkyrieVII. Olbricht had promised that Fromm would either join resistance
