Tutorial 13Question 1Illustrate and discuss transversal and mid-point strategy as the order picking route.Which one is the best strategy to be implemented in a warehouse?Transversal strategyThe S-shape strategy is also called the Traversal strategy. This strategy leadsto a route in which the aisles, that are to be visited, are totally traversed. Aisleswhere nothing has to be picked are skipped. Thus aisles are visited in theshape of an S. The picker thus enters an aisle from one end and leaves the aislefrom the other end, starting at the left side of the warehouse. After picking thelast item, the order picker returns to the front end of the aisle. This strategy isused frequently, because it is very simple to use and to understand.Diagram below, can see how the selected items are to be picked according tothe S-shape heuristic in a warehouse with a central depot and no cross aisles. The order picker starts at the depot and then enters the left most aislecontaining items or the right most aisle containing items, whichever is theclosest. The picker goes from one item to another by crossing the (itemcontaining) aisles entirely. Finally, he returns to the depot
Midpoint strategyFor this method, the warehouse is essentially divided into two halves. Picks in the front halfare accessed from the front aisle, and picks in the back half are accessed from the back aisle.
