T HEO 001: Worksheet 6 Name: Answer these questions in compact, error-free writing (approx. 6 sentences per answer), in 1 page only . What are the “synoptic” Gospels? Explain the meaning of the term ‘synoptic.’ In the Bible, the first four books of the New Testament are known as the gospels. The first three, Matthew, Mark, and Luke are so similar that they are sometimes referred to the synoptic gospels. The often tell the same stories of Jesus, usually in the same sequence and similar wording. The word ‘synoptic’ is Greek and means “seeing with the same eyes” Of what importance is the letter ‘Q’ in speaking about the Gospels? The “Q” refers to the very early saying of the gospel. It represents the parts of Jesus’ life that his followers remembered. “Q” appeared to be divided into three different parts. Q1 – largest part of the gospel. Describes Jesus as a teacher, philosopher. Q2 – describes Jesus as a prophet.
