Discussion 3: Name: solutions TAM212, Fall, 2003 The box in the figure travels along the industrial conveyor. If a box (mass = 1kg) pictured to the right starts from rest at A, and the belt increases its speed such that a t = (0.2t) m/s 2 , where t is in seconds, determine the force between the belt and the box when box arrives at point B. It helps to start by drawing the free body diagram from two “vantage points”. I will use “N” for the normal force between the belt and the box. There will be friction both tangential and normal to the belt. For ease in analysis, I will split the friction up into its components: n n t t f f e e f + = . We need to include a third direction, even though with t-n coordinates we often don’t consider it, to make sure not to neglect the normal force between the box and belt. I call that force N , and it should not be confused (though it is easy sometimes to do so!) with the total force in the normal direction. Step 1:
