Potential is Stored (not doing anything yet) 2. Kinetic is Energy of Motion (doing something) 3. Both forms can be converted to the other form C. Measuring Energy 1. Chemists use the Joule 2. More common to use the Calorie or Kilocalories D. Energy Laws 1. Law of Conservation of Energy – Energy cannot be Created or Destroyed but it Can be Converted from one form to another 2. Changing energy from one form to another cannot happen with a Loss of Usable Energy (usually as Heat) 3. Energy transformation leads to an Increase in Disorganization or Entropy E. ATP 1. Energy for Cells (cells can’t function without it) 2. Nucleotide with Three Main Parts a. 5-carbon Sugar - Ribose b. Nitrogenous Base – Adenine c. THREE Phosphate Groups (negatively charged) 3. Three phosphates repel each other a. Makes molecule Unstable b. ATP will easily lose one group to form ADP and P i (inorganic) / breaks bonds giving off energy c. Makes ATP an excellent Energy Donor 4. ATP formed in Mitochondria during Cellular Respiration II. Metabolic Pathways A. Series of Linked Reactions B. Begin with Reactants and End with Products C. Products from one reaction will be reactants for next reaction
