Case Study 1: Atrial fibrillation74 y old male, diagnosed with persistent atrial fibrillation (has had AF now for 6 y). Currently, thepatient only walks 10 mins (one way) to shops3/7. The patient’s wife prefers to do thehouseworkand chores to reduce triggering AF symptoms, however the patient is able to independently dressand clean himself. Patient reports he gets SOB when doing his independent ADLs, experiencesfatigue towards the end of the day and has to take a break after walking to the shops ashe “feelslike he can’t continue walking”.The patient has 2 children (35 y daughter, 37 y son)both childrenvisit their parents every 1/7. Patient reports he has supportive family, and were there for him whilehe had a surgery 5 years agoto “try and burn the tissue to stop my AF”.The patient mentions thathestarts to “mumble” and gets “cool and clammy” when he has a hypogylcaemic event. He finds itmore difficult to know when he has high blood sugar.The patient devises goals with you and wants to achieve the following with an exercise prescription:Increase the duration he can walk;Reduce fatigue levels in the afternoon;Reduce the SOB with ADLs.
