1 Dat Truong Core Values Essay Empathy, Kindness, and Honor The loss of motivation and the feelings of discouragement and defeat after a failure can be disorienting and cause a person to lose his or her sight of the end goal. During those crises when the inner strength is tested, having a defined set of core values brings about a sense of self-worth, confidence, and purpose in life. Core values are the foundational beliefs and principles that help as a guide and a driving force, as Roy Bennett, author of the book “The Light in the Heart,” stated: “Your values create your internal compass that can navigate how you make decisions in your life. If you compromise your core values, you go nowhere.” It is very important to think critically about my core values, to visualize and define clearly what they mean to me, assert their importance to myself, and act in accordance with them when facing difficult decisions. The three core values that guide my behaviors are empathy, kindness, and honor. Cultivating empathy helps me connect with other people, understand their feelings and what they are going through. To attain empathy, a level of emotional, spiritual, and intellectual intimacy must be achieved, but only after sufficient trust has been established can one open his heart and tell you what he is going through. There is a quote in the book “The Speed of Trust: the One Thing That Changes Everything” by Stephen M.R. Covey that I strongly agree with: “In a high-trust relationship, you can say the wrong thing, and people will still get your meaning. In a low-trust relationship, you can be very measured, even precise, and they will still misinterpret you.” I worked as a customer associate in an electronics retail store after graduating high school.
