Compass: 300 B.C. (A.D. 1100) Tools for Navigation A compass is a navigational instrument for finding directions on the earth. It consists of a magnetized pointer free to align itself accurately with Earth’s magnetic field. When sighted on an object, a compass will tell you how many degrees that object is from north What is Triangulation? GPS uses satellite triangulation to determine a position much like is done in navigation with the stars Positions are calculated from distance measurements to satellites The distance is determined by measuring how long a radio signal takes to reach a receiver from a satellite Based on the premise of triangulation (geometry) The Global Positioning System (GPS)

GPS triangulation works by finding the intersection of your distances from three or more satellites. 24 Satellites circle the planet. From 3-6 are needed to plot your exact location GPS Triangulation Problem: How to represent 3- D space in 2-D A map projection is any method used in cartography (mapmaking) to represent the curved surface of the earth or other body on a plane. The planet Earth is a sphere (obviously) so conventional coordinate systems can't be used to specify points on Earth's surface accurately. For this reason, map makers have devised numerous ways of dividing the planet so that it can be navigated and points on the surface can be universally located. Spatial Coordinate Systems Geographic Coordinate System The ancient Greek cartographer and astronomer Ptolemy introduced imaginary lines to his 27-map world atlas, around 150 A.D. Latitude obtained by measuring the length of the day or the height of the sun, the moon or certain stars Longitude is obtained by tracking time since the departure of a ship from a home port. Because the Earth completes one full rotation (360 degrees) in 24 hours, one hour corresponds to 360 / 24 = 15 degrees.
