Abstract: The objectives of this lab were to learn how to set up a fractional distillation apparatus while separating two liquids which were water and ethanol by means of fractional distillation. This lab was also done to learn how to purify organic liquids containing small amounts of impurities. During the experiment, the apparatus for fractional distillation was assembled using two condensers one to help vaporize the mixture and one for separation which is fractional distillation. After 6.5ml of ethanol was weighted out the resulted were then calculated. As a result of completing this lab with some experimental error, the percentage recovery was found to be 39.29% with a percent of purification of 86%.

Introduction: Distillation is a technique that is often used by scientist in chemistry labs to determine how pure a liquid can be. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid gradually becomes equal to the pressure of the atmosphere above the liquid. Condensing

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
