Abstract The objective of this lab was to learn how to prepare benzoic acid from impure sodium benzoate and calculate the percentage yield of the final products. The experimental plan was carried out as follows. During this experiment, two grams of sodium benzoate was weighed out and hydrochloric acid was added to it help dissolve the sodium benzoate compound. More HCl was continuously added to the solution until the pH reached 2, which is represented by a red color. After the substance was dried out using vacuum filtration, it was placed in the oven for about 20 minutes. Then, it was taken out and placed on weigh paper to get the actual weight of the sodium benzoate. The mass of the sodium benzoate given was 2.01g. As a result, the actual yield of the sodium benzoate was found to be 1.60g with a melting range of 120.0°C-121.3°C. The percentage yield was found to be 94% which is close to being fully pure. However, theoretical yield is actually 1.70g with a melting point range is 122-123°C.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
