While she begins by believing that Rocky Flats is a factory for manufacturing Dow cleaning products, she eventually learns that the plant manufactures plutonium triggers through exposure to public activism, media reports, and litigation, yet she continues to resist the notion that the plant is dangerous to the surrounding community. Obviously, by the time she has researched and written the book (over the course of 12 years!), she is an expert on the subject of Rocky Flats and recognizes how incomplete and erroneous her former perceptions were. She also recognizes WHY she and others in the community held on to those incomplete and erroneous ideas—even in the face of enormous evidence that contradicted their beliefs. For this assignment, you will identify a subject or event upon which your understanding has evolved over time and TELL THE STORY of how and why it did so, while paying particular attention to thinking critically about how and why you resisted “changing your mind” about the subject or event.
