She compares and contrasts the various situations and interprets what nature of communication that they represent . In the first situation , Tannen shows how the indirectness of the president of a university can get her in trouble when talking to even a subordinate . The member from the board of trustees finds her inappropriate when she says “I’ve just finished drafting this letter . Do you think you could type it right away? I’d like to get it out before lunch . And would you please do me a favor and hold all calls while I’m meeting with Mr. Smith?” (312) Once in her office, Mr . Smith called the president out for being “self-deprecating” (313) .
