Karina Morales Professor Bermudez 08 April 2020 Development of Chicana Feminist Discourse Chicano/a was a term that originated during the 1920s to the 1930s by Mexican Americans who described these individuals as immigrants and uneducated. This term has a symbolic connotation that represents their unique cultural heritage. It also has a feminine connotation which made women strong advocates. Women had several ideologies that identified them like forms of gender inequality, social justice, and social consciousness. Chicanas participated actively in the Chicano movement. The author, Alma M. Garcia stated, “Various struggles evolved within this movement: The United Farmworkers unionization efforts, the New Mexico Land Grant movement, the Colorado-based Crusade for Justice, the Chicano student movement, and the Raza Unida Party” (157). This was during the late 1960s to the mid 1970s, and based on their advocacy for their rights, the Chicana feminist movement emerged with the Chicano movement. Based on the social protest movements, the entire community was Chicano/as.
