Canadian Policy Institutions The Canadian government operates the public service using departments, smaller agencies (for example, commissions, tribunals, and boards), and crown corporations. There are two types of departments: central agencies such as Finance, Privy Council Office, and Treasury Board Secretariat have an organizing and oversight role for the entire public service; line departments are departments which perform tasks in a specific area or field, such as the departments of Agriculture, Environment, or Defence. The Conservatives used to be called the Progressive Conservatives and were more centrist than the current party who merged with the Alliance from Alberta who are more socially conservative. They run on a fiscal conservative platform and try not to talk about social issues, because that does not go over well. Think tax cuts are the solution to everything. Love the tar sands. Hate Kyoto. They were against same sex marriage but they didn't have enough votes to do anything about it so have taken it off the table as an issue. There are a handful of open gays in the Party (John
