STUDY GUIDE EXAM 3 THOMAS "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" o It's not your editor using the first line of the poem as the title…it's the actual title Thomas used. o Villanelle - French verse form. Pastoral tradition associated with this form…but it doesn't have to be about that. 19 lines long . Divided into 5 tercets (a stanza of 3 lines) & a final 4 line stanza . It only uses 2 rhymes & rhyme scheme is ABA ABA ABA ABA ABA ABAA . Line 1 is repeated entirely to form lines 6, 12, & 18; line 3 is repeated to form lines 9, 15, & 19 . o "Do not go gentle into that good night" & "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" o They are refrains . Refrains are not a special feature because it's part of the definition. o Special features . Written in iambic pentameter . Unusual subject matter , not pastoral. Also confessional - about Thomas & his father on his death bed. "And you, my father" "I pray" Parallel structure . Ex. "wise men" "good men" "wild men" "grave men" Pun . Ex.
