Intro to Women's Studies Women and Health Eating disorders Anorexia Nervosa -usually involves young women with a distorted body image that makes them obsessive about losing weight. White adolescent girls make up the majority of anorexics, usually from middle to upper class families. Bulimia - pathological excessive appetite with periodic binging and then expulsion of food. The food is expulsed most frequently by vomiting, laxative abuse, diet pills, or diuretics. Premenstrual syndrome - any symptoms or complaints which regularly comes just before or during menstruation but are absent at other times during the cycle. Symptoms are about 150 in number, including tension, irritability, asthma, backache, seizures, headaches, rage anxiety attacks, food cravings, headaches, hypoglycemia sinusitis, suicidal urges. Severely effected women who have PMS can not hold jobs nor maintain relationships # about 5 to 6 million in the U.S. Some believe it is caused by hormonal changes. SOme recommended treatments are eating frequent high protein meals, reducing consumption of caffeine, increase in Vitamin B-6 intake, oral contraceptives, tranquilizers and lithium. Facts about Women and health 1. The #1 killer of women in the US is heart ailments. 250,000 women die each year and 50% will have some sort of heart problem in their life. 6 times as many women die of heart disease as breast cancer 2. Breast cancer kills about 40,000 women a year. It is estimated that 1/5 of the deaths caused by breast cancer could be eliminated by proper breast self examinations.
