Lexie Anderson Mid-Term Exam Essay SOC 1110 SEC OL2 November 7th, 2020 Symbolic Interactionism, Functionalism, and Conflict Theory In an effort to explain certain social interactions and patterns, sociologists have developed a series of macro and micro level theories in which each fall under a sociological paradigm. In sociology, there are three main paradigms that have come to dominate and shape social thinking; structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism, and conflict theory. Through overarching theoretical and philosophical frameworks, these paradigms provide a sociological lens that allows for the formulation of theories and social experiments to ensue. In this essay, the differences of these three paradigms will be constructed and analysis of one Sociologist’s thoughts on a certain subject will be exemplified. Symbolic interactionism approaches society with a micro level analysis and allows scholars to view the relationship of individuals in their society.
