CROSS-DISCIPLINARY UNIT NARRATIVE2Unit Description and RationaleThis Unit is titled “Yoga and Mental health”, and will be taught to a 9thgrade physical education class.In this Unit, students will be introduced to yoga to help them practice techniques that will improve their overall fitness and wellness. Students will practice yoga for strength, flexibility, and relaxation of the body and mind. This unit will also cover techniques for increasing concentration, and decreasing anxiety which leads to stronger academic performance, and to improve mental health. The yoga unit in my physical education class will not just focus on the physical activity, but it will also include literacy skills to integrate another content area in the unit. On top of students practicing the skills of yoga, they will close read and analyze texts to understand the benefits of yoga on their every day lives, and to be able to improve their literacy skills by providing evidence with every response. The following learning objectives will be included in the unit: Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to perform yoga movements in variouscombinations and forms. Students will be able to demonstrate basic skills associated with yoga activities including strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Students will be able to close read the text “5 Ways Yoga Can Benefit Your Mental Health” to analyze the benefits of yoga on mental health,while citing textual evidence to support their responses. These learning objectives will be aligned to the following physical education and literacy standards: 1.3. L1. “Demonstrates competency in one or more fitness

L1. “Analyzes the overall wellness benefits of self-selected physical activities” (The New York State Physical Education Learning Standards, 2020). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1 “Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text” (English Language Arts Standards " Reading Literature " Grade 9-10, 2021).The purpose of this yoga unit is to teach students the importance of understanding the health-related fitness components that include cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, and body composition to avoid diseases. Not only is this unit going to teach students about the importance of physical activity, but to also raise awareness about mental health and howit is connected to yoga. Another purpose of this unit is to improve student literacy skills, so they can be successful in other content areas and be better prepared for their future. By combining physical activities with literacy skills, it will help students achieve the purpose of this unit, which is to make a connection between the mind and the body, and how it can benefit our
