The Social Order The kingship of Western Sudan was passed down matrilineally. Kingship is believed to have sprung from priesthood. The kings had religious affiliations and were believed to be in contact with the spirits and their power. The family unit was the basic social unit of the Kingdoms of Western Sudan.
