In the recent years, there has been asignificant increase in popularity of video games among children. The violent content in videogames has contributed to the popularity of this genre of entertainment. However, the violentcontent in these video games comes with significant negative consequences. Research indicatesthat numerous social and behavioral negative trends among children are associated with playingviolent video games. The objective of this research is to demonstrate that children should notplay violent video games because playing these games exposes them to a higher risk of increasedaggression and social isolation.The Increase Risk of Aggression among Children who Play Violent Video GamesA growing public concern due to youth violence, which includes school shooting, hasescalated ever since the Columbine shootings, which occurred in Littleton, Colorado in 1999.Violent videos games have been associated with the risk of increased aggression and socialmaladjustment resulting to a state of isolation among school-going children. A study by Whitakerand Bushman (2009) indicates that approximately 45 million households in the United Stateshave at least one game console. The growth of the gaming industry surpassed the movie industryin the US in 2005 and worldwide in 2008. Such a progression of the game industry is anindication of the popularity and growth of video games products that has resulted in the increaseof violent video games’ genre. While these games have an effect on different age groupsincluding adolescents and adults, the younger children are perceived as the most susceptiblepopulation to the negative effects associated with playing these games. These games provide more preferred option of entertainment than social interactiveactivities with peers and family, and an amusing activity that is preferred to school work.
