Modern America Viewpoints 16A and 16B How would you feel if one day a few government men stormed into your house, unlawfully, and destroyed your things, and then arrested you? You would most likely be confused and baffled at the injustices that have just occurred. This is how many suspected communists felt in the 1920’s. The Department of Justice is defending America from Communist Subversion ; this is A. Mitchell Palmers stance on jailing what could be innocent immigrants and citizens, and then deporting them back to their homelands’. 1 Palmer was the attorney general of the United States in 1920, and in his statement gives his opinion of what a “red” is and of what he justifies as the reasons for locking those “reds” away. Palmer described communists as aliens with misshapen minds who have set out to not only rob you of your faith but to also overthrow our democratic government.
