Can Evil be Justified? 9/14/06 Defense versus theodicy o Ms. Williams might be right to suggest that some beauty, wisdom, and strength of character is made possible by the existence of physical or moral evil (defense). o Jonas Salk’s proud parents and polio (theodicy). A crucial proposition o (P) If a perfectly good moral agent created any world at all, it would have to be the very best possible world that it could create. o If P is true, then the GCB is obliged to create the best of all possible worlds, assuming that there is such a thing. Must the GCB create the best world? o Robert Adams: In choosing to create a world with moral or physical evil, where the GCB could have created one with less evil, must God be less than perfectly benevolent? o If so, then the GCB is either wronging one of the creatures in that world, or the GCB has shown some moral perversity. The goldfish and the puppies o Suppose I choose to raise goldfish rather than puppies. o
