Deontological Ethics 10/12/06 Moral Objectivism o The doctrine that there is a fact of the matter as to what is right and wrong, and that this fact is not “relative” to a point of view. o It is compatible with quotidian relativism o You can hold it without “sitting in judgment” of others, and while respecting the autonomy of others. o Utilitarianism is an objectivist theory. Deontological (=Kantian) Ethics o Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) o Influential philosopher of Western tradition o The first recorded scholar to postulate other galaxies o “Kantian ethics” has many current champions On his tomb in Konisberg: o “Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and perseveringly my thinking engages itself with them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.” Some deontological views o Punishment is justified even when doing so does not maximize overall happiness o The mayor of Chicago must not torture the terrorist’s daughter
