Survival and Personhood 11/30/06 Review Session: Friday, December 8 th , Maury Auditorium 11-12:30 8 questions Why Diachronic Identity Matters o Legal and Moral responsibility: Is this person-stage the same person as the person-stage who committed that crime in the past? o Mental disorder: MPD and other disorders seem to call for an account of diachronic identity o Survival after death: The very possibility of going to heaven or elsewhere depends on the possibility of my surviving the destruction of my body. Locke’s Theory o Pn is one and the same person as P1 just in case Pn does or can remember… Real versus quasi-memories o The nutty history professor versus an elderly Napoleon o Both of them have memories of Austerlitz, the Alps o Only one set of apparent memories is genuine. Why? The box of Kleenex o “Suppose I took this box of Kleenex and lit fire to it. It is reduced to ashes and I smash the ashes and flush them down the toilet. Then I say to you, go home and on the shelf will be that very box of Kleenex. It has survived!
