Sean Larson ID# 21792768 Physics Section 12 10/18/07 Experiment 3: Forces- Newton’s Second Law Introduction: The main purpose of this lab is to prove Newton’s Second Law of motion, F=ma. The acceleration a of the system is given by a=M 2 *g/ M 1 +M 2 . The experiment is testing the equation F=ma seeing that it is such an important force in physics and most of life. Procedure: The assembly that was used is called an air track apparatus, which has holes on the rails that push air out on to the glider, which slides down the track. The glider is considered M 1 , M 1 =191.8g and M 2 is the known mass being suspended from the string attached to M 1 . There are two photogates that are used to measure time t. The first photogate starts a timer and the second one stops that same timer. The distance between the two photogates is considered x, Δx =46cm. On M 1 , the glider, there is a card attached to it which sets off the timer at the 1 st photogate as is passes through and stops the timer
