ID# 21792768 Physics Section 12 12/13/07 Experiment 6: Simple and Damped Harmonic Motion Introduction: The main purpose of this lab is to compare the time in seconds that the apparatus, both simple and damped, gives for a period of oscillation. T 0 is the undamped or simple period of oscillation. T D is the damped period of oscillation. Procedure: Again the air track apparatus is going to be used. We place the cart onto the track and attach two springs to each end of the cart. For the simple, undamped oscillations, a mass is added to the top of the cart. For the damped oscillations a sail is added where the mass used to be to keep the mass constant and to add drag force to the apparatus. Find where the cart is at equilibrium when the springs are added to them and pull the cart back 30 cm. Once that is done, release the cart and start the timer and record the time and distance for 10 oscillations. Results:
