Gannat Shalan Dr. Ron Michaelis Human Genetics Final Term Paper The human gut microbiome includes the microorganisms, including fungi and protists, but mainly bacteria, that reside within the human gastrointestinal tract. Unlike popular misconception, these microorganisms are actually beneficial The human body provides them with nutrients and shelter, but they provide the human body with ultimately: life. Benefits of Gut Bacteria For every normal human cell an individual has, there are ten bacterial cells. By analyzing a sample of human feces, there were more than 100 species of bacteria inhabiting the human gut found. In other words, one has approximately five pounds of bacteria living in one’s gut. Unlike the majority of our cells, bacterial cells are prokaryotic, which by definition means they have a less complex structure, lacking membrane bound organelles. However this simpler structure does not accurately reflect the level of complexity of their functions. Bacteria in our gut carry out multiple functions which include helping in digestion, immunity, and overall health. Bacteria are able to break down carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables that the body cannot degrade on its own, into simple sugars, and then these sugars can be used by the body as a source of energy. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
