Moll Flanders, A Fallen Angel Moll Flanders, the main character in the book The Fortunes & Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders,written by Dafoe, is telling her life story in this book. The reader can see how her life rise and fall, how she is a maid, then become a wife in a rich family, up and down, and then fall into the criminal world. She is a dynamic character. Her up and down life, mostly down, causes her character to change throughout the novel. Dafoe has succeed to create a Moll that will receive sympathy of the reader no matter what she does. Moll Flanders life is a chain of unhappy events, even though she moves up and down between classes. As long as Moll can recall, her mother has already leaves her as a new born baby because her mother has committed a crime. After some adventure, she comes and lives with her nurse. At that point of time, she is so naïve that she only wants to become a gentlewoman so she does not have to go to service. "When she saw that I was not pacified yet, she began to be angry with me. 'And what would you have?' says she; 'don't I tell you that you shall not go to service till your are bigger?' 'Ay,' said I, 'but then I must go at last.' 'Why, what?' said she; 'is the girl mad? What would you be −− a gentlewoman?' 'Yes,' says I, and cried heartily till I roard out again." At this point, the reader can see her innocent as a child. She does not want to go to service not just because she scares to work, but she does not want to leave her nurse side. She does not have a mother, because of that she thinks her nurse as her second mother, because that's the instinct of a child. The devil starts to play with her life after she's starting to enjoy her life. Her nurse dies and she becomes a maid in a rich family.
