Chapter 1 - Ecosystems for organisations
Business ecosystem is the community of organisations—including suppliers, distributors,
customers, competitors, government agencies, and so on—involved in the delivery of a
specific product or service through both competition and cooperation. The idea is that
each entity in the ecosystem affects and is affected by the others, creating a constantly
evolving relationship in which each entity must be flexible and adaptable in order to
survive.
The business ecosystem is very dynamic hence new challenges and developments can
affect the existing organisations. Examples include:
๏ Artificial intelligence and Robotics – Companies retrenching employees as a result
๏ Netflix – Replacing Cinema and DSTV
๏ Uber – Replacing taxis and buses
๏ VOIP- Putting traditional phone companies out of business
Every organisation in the ecosystem affects and is affected by other organisations. Entities
that are flexible, adaptable and able to manage relationships with key stakeholders
(customers, suppliers, distributors) strategically to ensure sustainability and evolution with
the changing ecosystem have high chances of surviving disruptions. A symbiotic
relationship is a mutually beneficial relationship (both parties benefit) whilst a parasitic one
is when one party benefits alone and the other party is harmed or does not benefit.
Elements of an ecosystem are covered by the following two models:
