GEY111 Lab 5: Rock Cycle

Purpose of this Lab
In this lab students explore the three types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic by
making observations and testing sample. This lab addresses GEY111 Mod 2 Outcomes: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
& 8.
Additional Materials student must supply:
 Blank white paper
 Paper towels
 Collected rock or sediment sample (Sediment is not the same as soil. Sediment does not
contain organic material but can typically be found under topsoil or along a riverbed.)
 Printer

Activities for Lab 5: Rock Cycle
Activity 1A: Determining Sediment and Grain Size
Follow the direction 1 and 2 in the Investigation Manual, record your information on Table 1:
Examining Particle Size . Take a photo of Step 1 with all of your samples displayed (including your
obtained sample), along with your Student Information Card. Use Figure 1 (same as figure 12 in
background document) to help you with your exploration. In addition to particle size, try to identify
the roundness and sorting of the samples.

Activity 2A: Rock Type Identification
From the Investigation Manual, follow the directions to identify samples A through F from the lab kit.
Take a photo of Step 1 with all of your samples displayed, along with your Student Information Card.
Take a photo of Step 7 for any sample(s) that had a reaction, along with your Student Information
Card. Take a photo of Step 8 for any sample(s) that made a clear mark on the glass plate (have a
pencil or some kind of item pointing to the specific mark), along with your Student Information Card.
