Arab-Israeli Class notes 1967 War Causes and Effects Most important year in conflict since 1917 June 1967 War Changes the Middle East conflict June 5 th -11 th 1967 Summary of 1967 War Nassar and Egypt could not destroy Israeli Did Nassar have genuine intent to go to war? Was he driven to war by internal politics? Israel solidified its existence but failed to achieve acceptance from arab neighbors 8,000 square miles to 40,000 square miles No longer conflict between arab nationalism and Israeli But a conflict between individual states vs Israeli because Israeli was in occupation of the arab states land Used acquired land as negotiation chip Defines arab Israeli negotiations Over what period of time and what will Israelis get for returning land Arabs could not accept the reality that Israeli won the war they instead placed the idea in the arab world that Britain and USA helped That Israeli could not do this alone In their minds arabs believed that they could have won if the west hadn’t helped the jews The USSR and the USA helped their clients No peace treatys or armistices immerge from war Beginning of end of pan-arabism; Egypt’s star in arab world tarnished Arab politics Who succeeds Egypt after the first 25 years from WWII
