Lecture part 1 Remember the three spheres of societal activity that I highlighted at the start of the class: the cultural (sociocultural) sphere, the economic sphere and the political sphere. We've already taken up the cultural sphere and will look at the economic sphere soon. Here, we'll examine the political sphere. Politics can dominate the sociocultural and economic spheres under some conditions. It has happened in many societies in the past. -What is the purpose of politics -- the justification for political power? (It can be summarized in a single word.) JUSTICE. TO DO RIGHT, BY PEOPLE IN SOCIETY. -There has to be AUTHORITY in order for power to be wielded for long time with great success. Leaders must have it to rule effectively. Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union did have legitimacy -- he commanded authority -- even though he was a tyrant. Leaders who last always do, and they can sometimes gain authority in spite of being ruthless. How do people acquire authority? Authority in the political sphere has been categorized into three types by sociologist Max Weber. -What is the first one? What did Thomas Hobbes write about this? TRADITIONAL- FAMILY LEADERSHIP. HOBBES- SOVEREIGN HAVE A RIGHT TO RULE.
