The debate over the environment is complex and involves two broad questions. First, the actual situation about environmental crises, present and future, is at issue. " Cornucopians " believe that resources are available for relatively unchecked economic growth into the foreseeable future, while many environmentalists anticipate serious problems if growth is not checked. Not only is the actual situation a point of contention, but second, there is strong disagreement about what approach to environmental issues is better. Some advocate planning and regulation. Others speak for more individual freedom to devise creative solutions to problems that appear. If you look into the debate over these issues, you will find that many people who are not trained specialists take strong positions about whether "Cornucopians" or environmentalists are more right. Often, it seems that political ideology leads to a point of view about scientific facts concerning resource depletion and related questions. Is there a way to transcend this tendency? Look at actual facts, and history. In this first segment, I will discuss an article by Mark Sagoff that addresses the first of these questions: the actual situation. Sagoff asks, "Do We Consume Too Much?" (The Atlantic Monthly, June 1997). Sagoff suggests that there are several misconceptions in the ongoing debate over the environment and its implications for human societies. Overall, he believes, people have too many misconceptions. - Misconception number one:
