Regional Differentiation - Economic growth in coastal provinces has been more robust since 1978 ( coast-inland gap ) o The rise of coastal regions is due to China’s shift from being and inward orientated state to becoming a more outward looking globalised economy No harbor in the West and so the new open door policy cannot benefit the few in the west - There is also a North-South gap o Growth rates and income levels are higher in southern coastal regions than northern coastal regions Aihui-Tengchong Line - West of the line: 57% of the area, but only 6% of the population - East of the line: 43% of the area, but 94% of the population - The greatest developmental challenges occur along this line because government benefits are difficult to access in these areas o Poverty policies o Environmental degredation o Environmental, social, and economic problems all come together One Belt, One Road Policy - Currently being conducted by the Chinese government o Focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries, primarily China, the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road (MSR) - Silk road connects o Europe, Russia, Turkey, The Middle East, Kazakhstan and China - Maritime Silk Road connects o Africa, India, Indonesia and China Today’s most important partners are all from African countries The Traditional Chinese Economy - 1127-1911 o Rural 90% population in the country side o High-productivity traditional agriculture Crop yields pre unit were high Terraced rice fields Massive application of human labour to small plots of farmland A growing population was supported Incomes and consumption standards remained low however Limited role of animal in farm work and human diet o Dense population o Advanced water transport systems 4
