Exercise 3: Muscle and Nerve Histology Data Table 3. Muscle and Nerve Histology Type of Tissue Slide Photograph Characteristics Smooth muscular tissue Each cell is spindle shaped with a single nucleus and no visible striations, involuntary (no conscious control) and is found mainly in the walls of hollow organs. ( i.e. stomach) Cardiac muscle tissue Cells appear striated and have a single nucleus, it is branched, intrinsically and involuntary controlled (no conscious control), and found only in the heart.

Skeletal muscle tissue Cells appear striated with many nuclei squeezed along the membranes (multinucleated), Most are attached to tendons and bones, and are voluntary (subject to conscious control). Nervous Tissue (800X) Made up of two categories of cells: neurons and neuroglia. Neurons are highly specialized nerve cells that generate and conduct nerve impulses. Neuroglia protect and support the neuron and help to maintain the equilibrium in the nervous system. The cell body of a neuron (soma), contains the nucleus and mitochondria. The dendrites transfer the nerve impulse to the neuron (soma) and the axon carries the action potential away to another excitable cell.

Questions: A) What were the defining characteristics of skeletal muscle? What is unique about the nuclei that support the function of skeletal muscle? The defining characteristics of skeletal muscle are: cells appear striated with many nuclei squeezed along the membranes (multinucleated), most are attached to tendons and bones, and are voluntary (subject to conscious control). The nuclei that support the function of the skeletal muscle are unique because they are pushed to the edge of the cell by the proteins that allow the cell to contract. B) What was one unique characteristic about cardiac muscle that was different from both of the other types of muscle tissue? Could you see this in the slide image? The cardiac muscle’s unique characteristic is that it is a specialized tissue that is only found in the heart. No I could not see this in the slide image.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
