They manipulated the participants into thinking they were getting free health care because they knew the term “free” would spark these poor people’s interest. Conflict theory focuses on the differences between classes based on power and wealth. The more powerful group; researchers and doctors used their knowledge about the African American’s needs to get what they wanted. The knowledge that the researchers and doctors had was actually the power that they had over the participants. Karl Max believed that social change would occur when there was enough tension and conflict. His belief was quite accurate. As he predicted, when the study was finally over the tension and conflict arose. All of the unethical, sickening and dishonest things that the “more powerful class” conducted came to light. Due to the results of this study, social change occurred to an extent.
