The stages of a civil suit begins with a demand letter is the first step, this when a lawyer sends a letter to outline the victims claim. This can lead to parties settling before court. The next step is the complaint, which is a written description of the victim’s legal claims against the defendant(s). The complaint is filed in state or federal court, depending on the nature of the case. After the compliant is the deposition. In many cases both sides may require depositions of anyone with relevant information, including the victim and the offender. A deposition is a proceeding in which attorneys can question the victim or witness in person. Next, either side may require the other side to respond to written questions or provide copies of relevant documents for the lawsuit. Lastly, the case will have a disposition and in one of several ways, settlement, alternate dispute resolution, motions, trial or appellate review.
