Some positives of this system, in which the pharmacist also commented on, was that there is easy communication with the pharmacist at any given time. There have been many times where I have had to call the pharmacist due to just needing something as simple as how long an antibiotic needed to run. For the pharmacist however, having quick access to call or text the physician if they have questions in regards to an order that was placed, helps to expedite the order being processed; they are able to quickly get their questions answered. Another very helpful aspect of this system, is that it crosses over information easily from Paragon to Omnicell, which is where all of our medication is stored. There is a delay when medications are D/C’d off the MAR, however, as stated in the interview, if you are scanning at bedside as well, you are able to catch that, and avoid a medication error. This delay has been brought up many times, and as our facility transitions to EPIC, this issue should resolve then.
PHARMACY REVIEW6Technology has changed in so many ways, in such a short amount of time. It has become less challenging to determine potentialmedication errors in healthcare; having information storedin a computer database, has taken a lot of guess work from the job. I couldn’t imagine how difficult it once was for our pharmacist to have to look up drug-drug interactions, or ingredients in a medication in order to avoid an allergic reaction. While medication errors are still on the rise, it was nice to learn how many safeguards are in place at my facility to hopefully help avoid these situations from happening to myself or a fellow coworker.
