storage container to keep out any additional impurities. Lastly, the mass of the crystals using a precision balance and recorded. The masses of the sample prior to the dissolving and after drying were used to calculate the percent of recovery using the following formula: To test the level of purity of the sample our group then tested the melting point. Two Thiele tubes were used in two separate trials to determine an average melting point of the sample. Each tube was filled with approximately ½ inch of solid crystals which settled in the bottom of the tube. One tube was placed in the melting point apparatus which allowed for our team to monitor the exact temperature of the solid within the vessel to determine the melting point. Once the first sample had melted, and the temperature was recorded, the second tube was inserted into the machine. We repeated the last step and found a range of melting points for our sample. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
