(HCAHPS) scores are directly affected by VBP reimbursement. Current HCAHAPS scores are only at
68% for the overall satisfaction of wait time. All staff providing care in the ED have the opportunity to
provide patient satisfaction, education, and quality care.
B2. Goal: In the course of three years, the HCAHPS scores regarding wait time in the Emergency
Department will increase by 10%.
By year one, a group of ED staff will be formed to develop a plan to improve wait
times.
By year two, a pilot group will be formed to begin implementing the plan provided by
the development group.

The benefits of efficient and timely care for patients in the emergency room would be
important to explain to the emergency room staff.
Explain to the staff how the impact of improved HCAHPS will financially help the
organization.
Explain the expectations of the goal and the expectation of time patient walks in the
door to when they are seen.
B4a. Marketing Key points:
Sharing the most current data with the staff will help them see where they are and
where they need to be with the goal.

Sharing this information at staff meetings is a good place to spread the information to
all.
Asking employees for solutions to improve the process could open up new ideas and
show staff engagement.
B6 Coordinating Informational Events
Asking the ED staff if they have any
ideas or solutions to the current issue of
seeing the patients timely in the
department to help engage them in the
project.
Asking if anyone is interested in
helping develop a policy to improve
the goal would gain employee buy into
the project.
Discussing the information and reason
or importance for the goal to increase
at a staff meeting.
Providing the current data on the
number of patients leaving the
department before being seen by a
doctor.
Reviewing evidence-based cased
studies concerning reducing wait times.
B6 coordinating Educational Events
Providing a read and sign policy for
that staff would ensure it has been
seen by the entire staff.
The staff that assisted in writing the
new policy for patient wait times
would present the new policy at staff
meetings.
