With the manipulation of the tension and the length of the string or even thestring itself and adding varying weights we realized it was possible to change the frequency of the wave on the string. Procedure: The procedure followed the steps displayed in the University of South Carolina-Columbia’s School of Physics and Astronomy lab manual. The mass of both strings along with the linear mass densities were already calculated for us. We clamped the vibrating piece to the ring strand and the pulley to the desk and attached the string to the vibrator through the strip. We ran the string from the vibrator over the pulley and tieda loop in the free end. We then measured the length of the string between the vibrator and the pulley. With only the weight holder on the string to provide tension, we turned the vibrator. At a particular tension the string will make a stable vibration with one or twoloops. We then added weight on the holder. When we reached the maximum amplitude
by increasing or decreasing the force we realized we could decrease the amplitude of the vibration. We then recorded the weight and total number of loops that we examined on the string. After allowing the string to settle and the vibration become stable we were able to measure the distance between two successive nodes in the vibration. We then changed the tension on the string to give a variation for the measurements with differentnumbers of loops and with the number changing we then repeated all of the measurements. We then changed the string and repeated all the measurements for the second string which had a different linear mass density.
